Frederick Man Sentenced To Life, Suspend All But 40 Years To Serve In The

Department of Corrections For 1st Degree Murder

Frederick, MD –  Today, in Frederick County Circuit Court, Judge Scott Rolle presided over the sentencing hearing of 24 year old Tyree Ronell Deangelo Haynes.  Haynes entered a guilty plea to 1st Degree murder on April 24, 2024 and will serve an agreed upon Life sentence, suspend all but 40 years.   Haynes has been held for the murder charge at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center since June 24, 2021.

On April 16, 2021, the Defendant fatally shot 17 year old victim, Malakai Cooke, in the parking lot of Country Inn and Suites, in Frederick.  The victim previously told family members he feared for his life and began living with friends in order to protect his immediate family.  Frederick County Sheriff’s Office detectives collected multiple video surveillance recordings of the area revealing the timeline of events leading to the murder.

The victim’s parents gave impact statements in court. “Tyree stalked my son for months.  My son told me he feared for his life and I will never see Kai graduate high school,” said Katey Cooke, the victim’s mother.

Upon release from the Department of Corrections, Haynes will be on 5 years of supervised probation with all standard conditions and must have no contact with the victim’s family.   Special conditions of probation include alcohol and drug evaluations and treatment, and mental health evaluation and treatment.

Deputy State’s Attorney, Kirsten Brown and Chief Assistant State’s Attorney, Kristin King represented the State of Maryland.
