FREDERICK MAN SENTENCED IN 2021 BASEBALL BAT ATTACK AND STABBING

FREDERICK, MD – Today in Frederick County Circuit Court, Aaron William Alston Abrecht, age 31, of Frederick was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Robert A. Greenberg to 50 years suspend all but 24 years to serve in the Division of Corrections for two counts of first-degree assault. Abrecht was found guilty by a Frederick County jury in April 2022 of the charges. The State recommended a sentence at the top of the guidelines, 50 years suspend all 30 years to serve. The Defendant was on probation for a domestic-related first degree assault from 2015 when he committed the instant offenses. The Court found the Defendant in violation of probation. The State recommended that the Defendant receive the back-up time of 18 years. The Court sentenced him to four years on the violation of probation consecutive to the 24 year sentence. The Court also denied the Defendant’s motion for a new trial.

On September 8, 2021 officers with the Frederick Police Department were dispatched to an apartment located at 90 Waverly Drive for the report of a stabbing. Responding officers located one adult male victim with severe injuries as the result of being struck with a baseball bat multiple times. A second adult male victim was suffering from severe injuries as a result of being stabbed numerous times with what was believed to be broken glass from a picture frame. The two men were transported to Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown by ambulance. The victims identified the defendant as their attacker. Responding officers located the defendant and his girlfriend attempting to flee the area on a miniature motorcycle. At some point in time, the motorcycle became disabled and Abrecht continued on foot down Waverly Drive toward the rear of a shopping center. Officers were ultimately able to take the defendant into custody.

The State believes that Abrecht came home to the apartment on Waverly Drive where he lived with the two victims. Testimony in the State’s case detailed that one of the victims had made sexual comments to the defendant’s girlfriend, and the victim and girlfriend held hands.  A physical altercation ensued after the defendant learned of this. The Defendant repeatedly struck the first victim with a bat, and later recorded a video on his phone of that victim bloodied, taunting the victim. The second victim came home shortly thereafter and was also attacked with a bat and stabbed with broken glass by Abrecht. The second victim called 911 and authorities responded.

The State was represented by Chief Assistant State’s Attorney Rebecca Clinton and Assistant State’s Attorney Paul Tumulty.
